Le 3 avril 2018, l'École d'Urbanisme de Paris a invité Mark Purcell à Champs-sur-Marne pour une conférence et un débat avec un public de chercheurs, étudiants et enseignants.
On april the Third 2018, the Paris School of Planning invited Mark Purcell (Department of Planning, University of Washington) to give a conference and to debate afterwards with a public of researchers, teachers and students.
Mark Purcell était de passage à Paris dans le cadre d'une conférence organisée à la Mairie de Paris à l'occasion du cinquantenaire de la publication du Droit à la Ville, ouvrage phare d'Henri Lefebvre dont les apports ont largement dépassé les frontières françaises, et notamment en direction des États-Unis après la traduction de l'ouvrage en Anglais au début des années 1990. Purcell lui-même a largement contribué à la discussion scientifique sur le Droit à la Ville qui s'est ensuivie depuis, notamment dans ses analyses du "piège scalaire", mais aussi dans ses analyses de la remise en cause posée par le Droit à la ville aux modes traditionnels de démocratie urbaine et d'encadrement par l'État de l'action sur la ville. Ce dernier point faisait plus spécifiquement l'objet de cette conférence du 3 avril.
Mark Purcell was in Paris on the occasion of a celebration organized at the Paris City Hall for the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of the Right to the City. Henri Lefebvre’s influential book and its main arguments have in the past fifty years broadly transgressed the French borders, in particular in the direction of the United States after its translation into English in the early 1990s. Purcell himself has contributed in his work to the ongoing scientific discussions triggered by the book, in particular with his analysis of the « scalar trap », but also with his assessment of the impact of the Right to the City on traditional forms of urban democracy and on the State’s centrality with regard the production of and action on the city. This last avenue was at the center of his conference in Champs-sur-Marne.
La venue de Mark Purcell à la cité Descartes a été l'occasion de réunir un panel de discutants issus de collectifs travaillant sur les dimensions spatiales des inégalités, sur la justice spatiale et sur le Droit à la ville au Sud, tous familiers des travaux du conférencier, et appelés à lire les propositions théoriques de Purcell à l'aune de leurs propres questionnements et positionnements de recherche.
Mark Purcell’s presence was the occasion to put together a panel of discussants stemming from various research collectives interested in the spatial dimension of inequalities, in spatial justice, and in the Right to the City’s translation to the Global South. All of them were familiar with Purcell’s work and were asked to discuss his theoretical propositions in view of their own research interests and positionings.

La conférence-débat, organisée par Sophie Didier (Université Paris Est), a par ailleurs donné lieu à un travail en épistémologie réalisé par les étudiants de M2-Recherche de l'École d'Urbanisme qui ont assisté à la conférence.
The event was organized by Sophie Didier (University Paris Est), and it also gave way to a work assignment in epistemology for the School’s 2nd year Master’s students who attended the conference.
